Mixed Media Button-Up Shirt – Melrose and Market

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

We designed this Melrose and Market mixed media button-up shirt to give you the polished look of a classic button-down with the comfort of your favorite knit tee. The body is cut from crisp cotton poplin that holds its shape through long days at the office, while the sleeves are made from a soft stretch-knit fabric that moves with you.

This hybrid construction means you can wear it tucked into trousers for meetings or left untucked with jeans on the weekend. The relaxed fit through the shoulders and bust prevents pulling or gaping at the button placket, and the slightly longer back hem flatters every silhouette. We chose classic white buttons and a spread collar that works under blazers or solo.

  • Cotton poplin body for structure and breathability
  • Stretch-knit sleeves with ribbed cuffs for ease of movement
  • Spread collar and full button-front placket
  • Relaxed fit through bust and shoulders
  • Curved back hem with side vents

Fabric choices and why they work together

Fabric choices and why they work together

The poplin we chose for the front and back panels is a medium-weight cotton weave that resists wrinkles better than standard broadcloth. It has just enough body to drape smoothly without clinging, which is why we use it across our tops collection for pieces that need to look polished without constant ironing.

The sleeves are cut from a cotton-spandex jersey blend that’s softer against your skin and gives you full range of motion when you reach or type. We added 1-inch ribbed cuffs at each wrist so the sleeves stay put without buttons or tabs. This combination means the shirt holds its shape where you want structure and flexes where you need comfort.

Fit details and sizing guidance

Fit details and sizing guidance

We cut this shirt with a relaxed, slightly boxy fit that skims rather than hugs. The shoulder seam sits about half an inch past your natural shoulder line, which prevents tension across the upper back and chest. The armholes are generous enough to layer over a thin tee or cami without binding.

Length from high point shoulder to hem is approximately 26 inches in size medium, which covers your hips when worn untucked. If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing down for a closer fit through the body or staying true to size for the relaxed look shown in our product photos. The stretch in the sleeves accommodates a range of arm lengths comfortably.

Care instructions to keep it looking new

Care instructions to keep it looking new

Machine wash cold on the gentle cycle with like colors. We recommend turning the shirt inside out to protect the buttons and reduce pilling on the knit sleeves. Tumble dry low or hang to dry—either method works, though air drying helps the poplin panels stay crisp longer.

If you prefer a pressed look, iron the cotton poplin body on medium heat while it’s still slightly damp. The knit sleeves don’t need ironing; a quick tug while damp will smooth out any creases. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which can break down the stretch fibers over time.

Perfect blend of comfort and style
I’ve been looking for a shirt that doesn’t feel restrictive at the office, and this one is it. The knit sleeves are so much more comfortable than traditional shirting, and the poplin front still looks professional. I’ve worn it twice a week since I bought it.

No more gaping buttons
The relaxed fit through the bust means I don’t have to worry about the placket pulling open. I’m usually between sizes, and the medium fits perfectly with room to move. The fabric washes well and doesn’t wrinkle much in my dryer.

Great for layering
I wear this under blazers all the time and the sleeves never bunch up. It’s also comfortable enough to throw on with jeans for errands. The length is just right to wear untucked without looking sloppy.

Love the fabric combo
The mix of materials is really smart. I can move my arms freely without the whole shirt riding up. Only reason I didn’t give five stars is I wish it came in more colors, but the white is super versatile.

Holds up after multiple washes
I’ve washed this at least ten times and it still looks new. The poplin hasn’t gotten limp and the sleeves haven’t stretched out. Definitely worth the price for something this durable.

Comfortable all day long
I wore this on a twelve-hour workday and forgot I had it on. The knit sleeves are that comfortable. It doesn’t gap, ride up, or need constant adjusting. This is now my go-to shirt for long days.

Questions about the mixed media button-up shirt

Yes, it runs true to size with a relaxed fit through the shoulders and bust. The poplin body is designed to skim rather than cling, and the knit sleeves have built-in stretch. If you prefer a closer fit, size down one size. If you’re between sizes and want the relaxed look shown in our photos, choose your larger size.

Yes, tumble dry on low heat. We recommend turning it inside out before washing to protect the buttons and reduce pilling on the knit sleeves. You can also hang it to dry if you prefer—both methods work well. The poplin body may benefit from a quick press with an iron on medium heat while slightly damp.

The cotton poplin body gives you the polished look and breathability of a classic button-down, while the stretch-knit sleeves provide comfort and full range of motion. This combination means you get structure where you need it and flexibility where you want it, without the restriction of traditional shirting or the casual look of an all-knit top.

No, the cotton-spandex jersey blend in the sleeves is designed to maintain its shape through repeated washing and wearing. The ribbed cuffs help the sleeves stay in place without losing elasticity. We’ve tested this fabric through dozens of wash cycles and it holds up well.

Yes, the poplin body is smooth and structured enough to tuck cleanly into trousers or skirts. The relaxed fit prevents excess fabric from bunching at the waistband. The knit sleeves won’t add bulk under blazer sleeves, which makes this shirt a great choice for layering.

No, the cotton poplin is medium-weight and opaque. You can wear it with a nude or white bra without anything showing through. The knit sleeves are also lined enough that they’re not sheer.

Currently we offer this style in classic white. The neutral shade works with everything in your wardrobe and is professional enough for the office. We’re considering additional colors for future releases based on customer feedback.
