Leather sourcing & tannery standards
We source hides from a single tannery in Tuscany that’s held ISO 14001 environmental certification since 2009. The facility uses vegetable tannins—chestnut and mimosa bark extracts—instead of chromium salts, which means the leather biodegrades at end of life and the runoff meets EU water-quality limits.
Each hide spends forty-five days in rotating drums with the tannin solution, then air-dries on wooden racks for another two weeks. That slow process lets the fibers absorb the tannins evenly, so the belt resists cracking when you buckle it around your waist day after day. The grain side receives a light wax coating to shed moisture without blocking the leather’s ability to breathe and flex.
Buckle design & fit mechanics
The double-buckle system borrows from nineteenth-century saddlery: one buckle anchors at the belt’s end, the second sits four inches forward. You thread the strap through both posts, pull until the belt hugs your waist, then fold the tail back through the forward buckle to lock the tension.
Because the hardware distributes pressure across two points instead of one, the leather doesn’t dimple or warp around a single prong hole. The brass develops a mottled greenish patina over six to eight months of wear—if you prefer the original gold tone, a quick rub with a microfiber cloth brings the shine back. Each buckle measures 1.25 inches tall and weighs about half an ounce, so the hardware stays visible without dragging the belt down your hips.
